1. Register as a sole trader if needed
If you start working for yourself, for example as a cleaner, driver or tutor, you may be treated as self employed. In this case you must tell HMRC so they know about your income.
What to do: Read the GOV.UK guidance on becoming a sole trader and check if your work counts as self employment. If it does, follow the steps to register online so you are set up for Self Assessment tax returns.
What do you need: You need your personal details, National Insurance number and a simple description of the type of work you do.
Outcomes: HMRC will know you are self employed and you will be ready to report your income in the correct way.
Lifehack: Write down the date you start self employed work because you may need it later for tax and benefit forms.
2. Register for Self Assessment
3. Keep good income and expense records
